We hired our neighbor who for years presented himself as a state certified contractor. He was hired to renovate a condo we recently acquired.
We were going to have the entire condo redone from ground up. We were promised that within 4-6 weeks the job would be completed and it would be tenant ready. We also after handing over $24.000 up front told him that that was all we were spending and not to ask for another penny especially because the job was hardly even touched at that point. But, being a friend and neighbor we trusted him.
6 months later after excuses and lies about appliances not being in stock, cabinets on back order we come to find out that he never ordered them in the first place. he claimed the new washer and dryer had arrived which we paid $1,200 for. My wife went over to see it and the heat vent inside was charred and burnt which he claimed was from him testing to make sure it worked. long story short he finally admitted that he bought a used one to cut corners since we only were spending $24,000.
We immediately insisted on the New one being brought in since we already paid for it and he finally did. Amongst many problems from electrical work and plumbing work not being hooked up correctly and an almost near fire from his faulty wiring of our fuse panel with a list of other things we had to have professionals come in to repair. Finally we decided to get the receipts from this liar and immediately noticed over $6,000 in fictitious receipts, including one for a propane tank refill that I had let him borrow and he said he would replace the gas, what a joke. So we then did a check on him via the Internet and found he had secretly put a lien on our condo for almost $3,000 dollars without anyone knowing.
We also come to find out He has not been licensed since 2004 and never pulled any permits. so not only did he file a fraudulent lien on our condo he did all the work illegally and none of the work was done correctly. On Top of everything he presented us with a CGC number that ended up stolen from some glass company in FT. Lauderdale.
